For this week's update I would like to send a few reminders about appreciated protocol at school.
Our diocese and school wants to provide the safest environment possible for your children. In order to accomplish this, all volunteers must:
1) Attend a VIRTUS training session. This is a one time, three hour, training session. Registration for the Virtus class can be completed on the Virtus website: www.virtus.org. (There is also a link on the St. Bernard Catholic School Website.)
2) Complete a background check. Background checks can be completed through the diocesan website at www.gbdioc.org. Click on the Protecting God’s Children tab and choose Background Check. The Access Code is gbdioc04 St. Bernard School.
3) Read and sign the Diocesan Code of Conduct for volunteers.
We appreciate your cooperation and dedication to keeping all children safe and we look forward to your involvement in your child’s education.
- Student Pick Up: If you are going to pick your child up early from school I need either an email or written note in the morning. It makes the day run smoother if I can prepare what they will be missing if I know they are leaving.
- Transportation Home: Students will need to provide a note or parents can send an email if their child is taking a different mode of transportation home. If there is no note/email, they will have to take their regular route home.
- Brown envelopes need to be returned to school by Thursday morning. They are needed in the office for stuffing for the following week.
- Mid Trimester Reports & Report Cards: These are to be signed and the signed portion should be returned to school ASAP. As I have mentioned to the students, their grades are earned not given to them. If they are not happy with their grades, there are probably assignments that they did not give full effort towards; therefore hindering their grade. If you have questions about grades please let me know.
- Conferences: Parent Teacher Conferences are next week. Your scheduled time came home in the brown envelope on Tuesday. Please be aware that the time slots are only 15 minutes. If you feel that our conversation will take longer, please email me to set up another time to meet. Students are not allowed in the room during conferences, but there are babysitting services available in the Preschool rooms downstairs.
- Parent Volunteering: Below you will find a sheet containing the mandatory requirements for parent volunteers. If you have any questions, you may contact the office.

Math
We have started Unit 2 and that means that we shook up the groups a little bit between Mrs. Lamm and myself. No matter the class students are in, we are working on the same lessons and providing the same homework. Speaking of homework, it will look a bit different from now on. After a lot of feedback over the years about the "new way to do math" I have decided that it creates more frustration on both parents and students when they are trying to complete math homework at home. In efforts to make night times for enjoyable for families, I am attempting to take away homework (for math). Students will complete evens or odds (based on the day) on both the remembering and homework in class. From this I am able to tell if students are grasping the concept or not from fewer problems. If they are not able to finish within the allotted class time, they will bring the sheet home to finish. If a student does not seem to be grasping the concept they will be retaught and will complete the rest of the sheet for skill practice. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Or you could even sign up with Mrs. Hunter to become a helper during math time. :)
